Have you also lost yourself in the delicate fragrance of the flowers when a breeze blows? Let’s come into the wonderful fairyland full of sweet osmanthus!

Osmanthus fragrans is variously known as sweet osmanthus, sweet olive, tea olive, and fragrant olive, which is a species native to Asia from the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山脉) through southern China to Taiwan and southern Japan and southeast Asia as far south as Cambodia and Thailand. It is cultivated as an ornamental (装饰性的) plant in gardens in Asia, Europe, North America, and elsewhere in the world for its deliciously fragrant flowers which carry the scent of ripepeaches or apricots (杏). A number of cultivars (品种) have been selected for garden use, with varying flower colors.

In Chinese cuisine, its flowers may be infused with green or black tea leaves to create a scented tea (桂花茶). The flowers are also used to produce osmanthus-scented jam (桂花酱), sweet cakes (桂花糕), dumplings, soups, and liquor. Osmanthus jam is adopted as an ingredient in a type of gruel(稀粥) called chátāng (茶汤), which is made from sorghum(高粱) or millet(小米) flour and sugar mixed with boiling water. From the occasion of its blossoming, the sweet osmanthus is closely associated with the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. Osmanthus wine is a traditional choice for the "reunion wine" drunk with one's family, and osmanthus-flavored confections and teas may also be consumed.

From ancient times, tales of the sweet osmanthus has been spread from mouth to mouth. You may hear not a few myths from the elders. But are you aware of the different connotations carried by osmanthus in easternand western cultures?

  Myths and culture

  in Chinese and Western

  In Chinese

In traditional Chinese mythology, a sweet osmanthus grows on the moon and was endlessly cut by Wu Gang: some versions held that he was forced to cut it every 1000 years lest its luxuriant growth might overshadow the moon itself, others advocate that he was obliged to cut it constantly only to see it regrow an equal amount every day.

In late imperial China, the osmanthus was also associated with the imperial examinations(科甲取士), which were held in the 8th lunar month. The chengyu "pluck osmanthus in the Toad Palace" (蟾宫折桂) was a euphemism(委婉说法) for passing, in part since one would attract hangers-on(奉承者,倾慕者) as if he smelled as sweet as osmanthus thereafter.

  In Western

Apollo(阿波罗), one of the most powerful gods and a great warrior(勇士), mocked(嘲弄) the god of love, Cupid(丘比特), for his use of bow and arrow. The insulted Eros then prepared two arrows: one of gold and one of lead. He shot Apollo with the gold arrow, instilling(使……获得) in the god a passionate love for the nymph(仙女) Daphne(达芙妮)Whereas he shot Daphne with the lead arrow, instilling in her a hatred(仇恨) for Apollo. Daphne had spurned(蔑视) many potential lovers of her, preferring woodland sports and forest exploration instead,as she had dedicated herself to(致力于) perpetual(永久的) virginity.

Apollo continually pursued her, begging her to stay, but the nymph continued her flight. Seeing that Apollo was bound to reach her, Daphne called upon her father. And with Peneus answering her plea(请求), she was turned into a laurel tree.

In spite of Daphne’s rejection, Apollo vowed to love her forever: “Always my hair will have you, my lyres will have you, my quivers(颤动) will have you, laurel tree. You will be present to two Latin places, when the happy voice will sing a triumph(胜利) and they will visit the great ceremonies at the Capitoline Hill(卡匹托尔山).”

Apollo also used his powers of eternal youth and immortality(不朽的) to render(表达) Daphne ever green. For this reason, the leaves of the Bay laurel tree do not decay.
